A MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION TEAM PDF Print E-mail
Principal – Leanne Jensen-Steele

Welcome to 2009 at Sunshine Beach SHS. As the newly appointed Principal, I am excited and looking forward to being part of a well respected and dynamic educational community.

OUR GUIDING MISSION

To provide an education of the highest standard. It is envisaged that our educational focus will prepare students to become responsible, effective, creative, enterprising and fulfilled citizens of tomorrow’s world.

UNDERPINNING COMMITMENT

As an educational institution, we have developed an organisational environment and an educational culture that is designed to clearly identify and support each individual student’s needs. The personnel at Sunshine Beach SHS are committed to this educational philosophy whilst aiming to meet the following major goals for students:
  • developing attitudes, skills and a base of knowledge as a foundation for the encouragement of critical thinking, imaginative and creative powers, effective communication and the capacity and desire to become independent lifelong learners;
  • developing and extending their personal character and individual talents;
  • developing a strong sense of community service, effective leadership and loyalty to others;
  • developing within each of them a sense of worth and respect for themselves and others in a diverse world.
Further, our school recognises the need to support the personal and social development of our students. We embrace the concept that education is a shared responsibility between school and home and as such we seek to promote this productive partnership. We aim to create:
  • a broad and balanced curriculum in which students are challenged to achieve to their highest level;
  • a highly competent, skilled and qualified professional staff who are committed to Sunshine Beach State High School’s mission statement;
  • a learning culture which is disciplined, inclusive and supportive;
  • a broad programme of cultural, intellectual, physical and aesthetic activities;
  • a sporting platform where students are encouraged to strive vigorously for success, whilst embracing the virtues of honesty and integrity.
As an educational organisation, we have created frameworks to support “Quality In All We Do”. Our framework aims to embrace:
  • clear standards that focus on academic and social goals;
  • community and social networks;
  • coherent curriculum that meets the demands of the 21st Century learner and worker;
  • positive and clear partnerships with home and community;
  • opportunities to extend student talents;
  • high quality and maximum learning time;
  • co-curricular options.
This year we will continue to work on a number of key agendas to enhance individual student learning outcomes. We will aim to better prepare our students for the dynamic world in which they will learn and work. At the cornerstone to this will be students’ ability to embrace and “own” their learning by being:
  • committed to “lifelong” learning;
  • responsible and responsive to community and team expectations;
  • self-disciplined and hard working;
  • respectful of self, others and the environment in which we live and work;
  • flexible, creative, constructive team members.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the support of the community, parents, students and staff for their efforts in creating such a positive learning community. I look forward to adding value to the educational and relational leadership of our school. I will work hard to generate support for students, staff and parents as we work together to create the “next” phase of Sunshine Beach State High School’s journey. I look forward to working with you and for you throughout this coming year.

Deputy Principal – Senior School – Paul Fitzgerald

The Senior School of Sunshine Beach SHS is a training ground for students to enter the world as skilled, clever and creative young people who will enhance and enrich the community in which they live. Our subject offerings of OP subjects, Vocational Certificates, Transition to Work Program and School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships allow students the opportunity to pursue a senior education that is tailored to suit their needs.

In 2008, every student who graduated from Sunshine Beach SHS achieved an OP score or a Vocational Certificate. This stringent credentialing process ensures students leave our school in the best position to begin their careers and or training. I welcome all parents and students to discuss any aspect of their senior schooling with me so they fully realise everything Sunshine Beach SHS offers.

Deputy Principal - Human Resources - Fiona Free
I was extremely excited to be relocated to Sunshine Beach State High School in Semester 2, 2008. Wow, what a friendly, warm and welcoming place! I love visiting classes and seeing ‘learning in action’. I really value personal interactions and believe that forming supportive relationships is one of the keys to a successful school. Because of this, I prioritise meeting with new enrolments and their families, in an effort to ensure a smooth transition into our school. In Semester 2, 2009 my role changed from DP - Middle School, to DP - Human Resources. For the remainder of 2009, I will be responsible for the enrolment and leadership of Year 9s and subsequently in 2010, the Year 10 group will be the cohort of students for whom I am responsible.

I have set the bar high in terms of my expectations on attendance, participation, uniform and behaviour. I challenge each and every one of our students to:

  • transition into our school with enthusiasm and commitment;
  • take on leadership and/or mentor roles within our student body; and
  • make the best contribution they possibly can to our school community.

I challenge our Year 9 students, as they enter the final year of the middle phase of learning, to:

  • explore the possibilities and curriculum options available to you;
  • embrace difficult challenges as opportunities to grow and develop; and
  • think seriously about what in which career options you are interested.
My aim as the Deputy Principal Human Resources is to:
  • foster a genuine sense of belonging for the young people in our care;
  • persistently explore strategies and ideas on how our teachers, students and parents can address individual students learning gaps as identified in their reports and NAPLAN results;
  • deliver a vibrant curriculum with in the QCAR framework, National Curriculum expectations and Year 10 Guidelines; and
  • continue to excite our school community about learning.

In my new role, I have begun working with the Student Services team to continue to grow our wonderful Support and Alternative Program service. I am delighted to be involved with our dedicated Learning Enhancement team and to continue developing both our literacy/numeracy support structure and the extension activities offered to our gifted and talented students.

Deputy Principal – Middle School - Christopher Robinson

I am pleased to introduce myself and become part of the Sunshine Beach State High School community. It is a great honour to be appointed Deputy Principal and I take on this role understanding the responsibilities to students, parents and all staff, as I bring 22 years of teaching and administrative experience to this position.

My philosophy of leadership is grounded in four words:
  • people
  • passion
  • purpose
  • performance

School communities are partnerships between people - teachers, students and parents. The quality of these relationships is dependant on honest and open communication. The "FISH" philosophy of Play, Be There, Make Someone's Day and Choosing Your Attitude are practical examples of the behaviours I will model.

I am passionate about education and have a genuine and honest concern regarding the health, safety and welfare of both students and staff.
My purpose is to ensure "Quality In All We Do", and as such ensure state schools are the schools of first choice for parents and students as we provide the fairest and most equitable educational opportunities.
I have high expectations regarding behaviour and academic achievement of students and professional performance of staff. The wearing of correct and appropriate uniform, attendance at school and taking PRIDE in our facilities and grounds are issues to which I will be attending.
My priorities as Deputy Principal are:
  • to provide structures and processes to support Middle Phase of Learning at Sunshine Beach State High School
  • not only to provide excellent physical resources (classrooms) but to provide a rich, relevant and real curriculum that connects students
  • to refocus literacy and numeracy through timetabling structures (NAPLAN, QCAR)
  • to enhance digital pedagogy for 21st century learners
  • developing a teaching charter for the Middle Phase of Learning, ensuring ownership, commitment and "professional communities".
The challenges are significant, but I know with the support of a motivated and supportive staff and school community, we will all move forward together.

Business Services Manager - Karen Gillespie

As Business Services Manager, I play a key role in the operation of Sunshine Beach SHS and oversee an Annual Budget in excess of $1.5 million dollars. The management of our School's assets, facilities and the support workforce are also important components of my role.

2009 will see staff and student’s learning environment enhanced with a focus on refurbishing facilities. Extensive work has been carried out this term in the grounds and over the next few weeks external painting will freshen up student outdoor areas. The Administration building has also received a much needed refurbishment giving it a positive & welcoming vibe.

Thanks to a successful submission for Government funding we have been able to recently install five 8,000 litres water tanks and a solar hot water system. This will effectively reduce our water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

I am privileged, in my role as Business Services Manager, to lead a team of experienced and skilled support staff, all of whom add tremendous value to the education of our young people. The support team consists of Administration Officers, Teacher Aides, Scientific Officers, Schools Officers and a Cleaning team.

I look forward to communicating to parents & the school community, ongoing news of improvements to our facilities on a regular basis through the news reports on our website.

I welcome your feedback and comments and can be contacted on the number listed below.
