9 October 2018

Dear Year 6 parents and families
I trust this letter finds you all well and excited for your child as they prepare to enter high school with us in 2019.
We wish to stay in touch with you as closely as possible in the lead up to this exciting phase of your child’s educational journey – below are some important dates and information that will assist you throughout this time.
It is with great excitement that I will continue in the role of Deputy Principal for Year 7 in 2019. The middle years is a passion of mine, and so I am thrilled to continue working closely with this age bracket of children and you as their parents. Jo Kearney will continue as or Head of Department of Junior Secondary jdono66@eq.edu.au and we will welcome a new Head of Year for Year 7 – Ms Shannon Hill. Shannon is an experienced staff member of SBSHS and a valued community member familiar with many students and their families. She will be your first point of contact should you require any pastoral care, academic support or contact with multiple teachers. Shannon will be happy to assist you in ensuring a comfortable settling in phase for your child and be contacted on shill127@eq.edu.au
Enrolment update: Thank you to those families who have returned their child’s enrolment forms. Please note that there will continue to be small fortnightly bulk enrolment sessions on a Tuesday at 3pm. If you are yet to return your child’s enrolment forms, please book an enrolment interview through SBSHS online booking system (see Quicklinks – Parent Bookings on our website). We are in the process of compiling classes for 2019, and this information confirming your child’s intention of commencing with us would be greatly appreciated. If you require a further enrolment package, your Year 6 teacher will have some spares or you are welcome to collect one from us in Administration. Please complete all student enrolment forms and bring along with you any required supporting documentation i.e. proof of residence. All enrolment forms are required by 5 November (Monday Week 5, Term 4).
Excellence Programs in Music & Surfing: If you child wishes to gain entry into one of our programs of excellence, they need to contact Helen hleyd1@eq.edu.au (Music) or Janine jlahe4@eq.edu.au (Surfing) at your earliest convenience. There are minimal places left.
Transition Program: All students have now completed their visit with us and have engaged in subject areas as Science, Maths, English, Humanities, Italian, Arts, PE, Food Studies, Digital Technologies and Design and Technology. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to become familiar with our wonderful school, teachers and facilities. Can I take the opportunity to thank the administration and staff from your child’s school in supporting these important transition days. Our next transition event will be the Orientation day – more information is provided below.
CREST Program: Congratulations to those students who have been selected as part of the CREST program for 2019. This program will see CREST students form a separate class in literacy and numeracy with teachers continuing to deliver an innovative and creative curriculum that promotes higher order thinking. It has been confirmed that our 2019 CREST teacher Mr Villiers will continue in his role next year. Most of our Young Crest Scholar children will already know Mr Villiers through attending the four days of excellence throughout this year. At the start of the year, there will be a CREST information session for parents on Wednesday 6 February at 3.15pm (J06). Mr Villiers will communicate with parents and teachers regarding these meetings. Should you require to contact Mr Villiers, his email is gvill12@eq.edu.au
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Sunshine Beach State High School is at the forefront of education delivery through the use of technology.  BYOD is our solution where students bring their own device to school in order to access the internet and/or school network through a managed Wi-Fi connection.  Students will need a laptop with minimum specifications (see appendix 1) to join our BYOD Program.
Information for our BYOD Program is available on the school website – go to: www.sunshinebeachhigh.eq.edu.au
To participate in the Sunshine Beach State High School BYOD Program you will need to:
  1. Complete and submit a BYOD Connectivity Agreement Form
  2. BYOD invoice generated on 21/11/18 – refer to invoice for range of payment options.
  3. Students will then be contacted by our computer technicians at the commencement of the 2019 school year to connect their laptops to our school network.
Our preferred option is for all students to have their own laptop and join our BYOD Program.  However, there will be a limited number of school laptops available for day use only to support students who do not have a laptop.
Lockers: A limited number of lockers will be available on a first in best dressed arrangement for students to store their laptop during school hours when they are not required. A padlock and key must be supplied by the student. The location of the locker will be determined by which sporting house the student belongs to. On the first day or week of school, students are invited to approach their house staffroom and request a locker.
Uniform Shop: Our uniform shop is through The School Locker (TSL) at Maroochydore. To purchase uniforms you have two options:
1.       Visit the store in person - Homemaker Centre Maroochydore
2.       Order online www.theschoollocker.com.au
Please note that students are required to purchase correct formal shirt (with matching tie for girls), polo shirts, skirts/shorts and school hat. (Jumpers can also be purchased). School backpack, black school shoes and plain white socks can also be purchased through TSL or your preferred retailer.
Please note that the formal uniform is compulsory and must be worn on assembly day or school events. For our full uniform policy please refer to our school website or parent handbook (when issued on O-day).
Please note that in support of our school uniform policy, students in Junior Secondary grades are to wear the reversible school hat (navy with a reversible house colour). Students will be allocated to their sporting house based on their sibling/s placements (same house will be allocated) or their preferred surname (as on their enrolment forms).
A-D: BANZAI (red); E-L: MUNDAKA (purple);
M-R: ULUWATU (green); S-Z: WIAMEIA (blue).

The students will spend the day with their new class group, forming friendships to ensure their transition with us in 2019 is as smooth as possible. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to meet their core teachers for the following year and increase their familiarity with our campus. Parents are very welcome to drop their child off to the PA building as of 8:40am (the program will commence at 9am) and stay with us for a coffee and morning tea kindly provided by our Parents’ Group. This is a wonderful way to meet and network with other parents whose child too is commencing high school. Your child’s school will communicate further details with you. Please note that parents are responsible for coordinating their child’s transport to and from SBSHS for the day. If you do not attend one of our three main feeder schools (SBSS, TSS, NSS) that attended our “visit high school for a day” program however are joining Year 7 in 2019 at SBSHS, you are invited to attend. It is imperative that your child is involved in this day and we encourage you to make contact with Mrs Jo Kearney (jdono66@eq.edu.au) who is coordinating the day to alert us to your child’s attendance. If you have any friends whose child attends a non-feeder school, please feel free to pass this information onto them as required. Please save this date and keep an eye out for further information.
