Transition Yr 6 - 2017 to Yr 7 - 2018

16 October 2017

Dear Grade 6 parents and families,

I trust this letter finds you all well and excited for your child as they prepare to enter high school with us in 2018.

We wish to stay in touch with you as closely as possible in the lead up to this exciting phase of your child’s educational journey – below are some important dates and information that will assist you throughout this time.

It is with great excitement that I will continue in the role of Deputy Principal for Grade 7 next year. The middle years is a passion of mine, and so I am thrilled to continue working closely with this age bracket of children and you as their parents. We will welcome a new Head of Year for year 7 (TBA). This person will be your first point of contact should you require any pastoral care, academic support or contact with multiple teachers. They will be the perfect fit for this role and will be only too willing to assist you in ensuring a comfortable settling in phase for your child.

Enrolment update: Thank you to those families who have returned their child’s enrolment forms. Please note that there will continue to be small weekly bulk enrolment sessions of a Wednesday at 9am. If you are yet to return your child enrolment forms please call our office to book in for an enrolment session at your earliest convenience. We are in the process of compiling classes for 2018, and this information confirming your child’s intention of commencing with us would be greatly appreciated. If you require a further enrolment package, your Grade 6 teacher will have some spares or you are welcome to collect one from us in Administration. Please complete all forms and lodge back with us at Admin. All enrolment forms are required by 27 October 2017 (Friday week 4, Term 4).

Excellence Programs in Music & Surfing: If you child wishes to gain entry into one of our programs of excellence, they need to contact Helen (music) or Janine (surfing) at your earliest convenience. There are minimal places left. If you reside outside of our catchment zone and are successful in obtaining a place in one of our excellence programs, then your enrolment is automatically supported and processed. Please contact us should you require any further information.

Transition Program: All students have now completed their second visit with us and have engaged in subject areas as Science, Maths, English, Humanities, Italian, Arts, PE, Food Studies, Digital Technologies and Design and Technology. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to become familiar with our wonderful school, teachers and facilities. Can I take the opportunity to thank the administration and staff from your child’s school in supporting these important transition days.

CREST Program: Congratulations to those students who have been selected as part of the CREST program for 2018. This program will see CREST students form a separate class in literacy and numeracy with teachers continuing to deliver an innovative and creative curriculum that promotes higher order thinking. It has been confirmed that our 2018 CREST teacher Mr Villiers will continue in his role next year. Most of our Young Crest Scholar children will already know Mr Villiers through attending the four days of excellence throughout this year. At the start of the year, there will be a CREST meeting for the students (week 1) and an information session for parents (week 2). Mr Villiers will communicate with parents and teachers regarding these meetings. Should you require to contact Mr Villiers, his email is

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Sunshine Beach State High School is at the forefront of education delivery through the use of technology.  BYOD is our solution where students bring their own device to school in order to access the internet and/or school network through a managed Wi-Fi connection.  Students will need a laptop with minimum specifications (see BYOD information sheet (PDF 125 KB)) to join our BYOD Program.

Information for our BYOD Program is available on the school website – Go to:

To participate in the Sunshine Beach State High School BYOD Program you will need to:

1.       Complete and submit a BYOD Agreement Form (PDF 90KB)

2.       Make full payment of $60.00 to the School Office.

3.       Students will then be contacted by our computer technicians to present their laptop for “on boarding” of their laptop to the school network.

Our preferred option is for all students to have their own laptop and join our BYOD Program.  However, there will be a limited number of school laptops available for day use only to support students who do not have a laptop.

Lockers will be available for students to store their laptop during school hours when they are not required. A padlock and key must be supplied by the student. The location of the locker will be determined by which sporting house the student belongs to. On the first day or week of school, students are invited to approach their house staffroom and request a locker.

Uniform shop: Our uniform shop is now through The School Locker at Maroochydore. To purchase uniforms you have two options:

1.       Visit the store in person. Homemaker Centre Maroochydore

2.       Order online School Locker (TSL) website

Please note that students are required to purchase correct formal shirt (with matching tie for girls), polo shirts, skirts/shorts and school hat. (Jumpers can also be purchased). School backpack, black school shoes and plain white socks can also be purchased through TSL or your preferred retailer.

Orientation Day: On Tuesday 5 December from 8:30am, all Grade 6 students will attend the orientation day. Students are asked upon arrival at SBSH to report to the Cavern Theatre, Performing Arts (PA) building, where they will be seated in their 2018 class. The students will spend the day with their new class group, forming friendships to ensure their transition with us in 2018 is as smooth as possible. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to meet their core teachers for the following year and increase their familiarity with our campus. Parents are very welcome to drop their child off to the PA building as of 8:30am (the program will commence at 8.50am) and stay with us for a coffee and morning tea kindly provided by our Parents’ Group. This is a wonderful way to meet and network with other parents whose child too is commencing High School. Your child’s school will communicate / coordinate transport and other arrangements – so please save this date and keep an eye out for further information. If you do not attend one of our feeder schools involved in transition (SBSS, TSS, NSS) however are intending on attending SBSHS in 2018, you are invited to attend. It is imperative that your child is involved in this day and we encourage you to make contact with Mrs Leanne McFie ( who is coordinating the day to alert us to your child’s attendance. If you have any friends whose child attends a non-feeder school, please feel free to pass this information onto them as required.

First Day: Students are to wear their formal uniform on Day 1 of 2018 (Monday 22 January). All students are to assemble in “House Group” (assigned on orientation day) in the Student Centre by 8.50am. Students are welcome to enter the Student Centre as of 8.30am. Students are to bring four A4 lined books, pencil case, school hat, morning tea, lunch and a water bottle on day 1. Our canteen will be operating though for those students who may like to purchase their meals on their first day of High School. Parents and families are most welcome to attend our Day 1 assembly and invited to remain behind afterwards for a special morning tea provided by our Student Services team. This will be held at the back of the Student Centre once students are dismissed.

Parents Groups: You are invited to join us on the first Thursday of every month at 9.00am for an informal coffee catch up at a local café or here at SBSHS. Location and dates will be emailed out in 2018 and posted on Facebook. Coffee and cake kindly provided by SBSHS. New and existing parents are encouraged and welcome to attend. For further information on our successful parents’ group, please contact Mrs Sharon Steel on

Facebook: SBSHS is highly active on Facebook. Please “like” us to stay informed regarding date claimers and other important information and events. Please invite your friends to like us as well to assist building a strong community of parents.

Grade 7 Teambuilding Day. In the second week of school (Thursday 1 February), the Grade 7s will participate in a one day (on site) team building day to form and strengthen relationships between peers and teachers. Students will have the opportunity to participate in such activities as rock climbing, bungy trampoline jumping, treasure hunts and resilience workshops around verbal combat. A BBQ lunch will be provided by our Student Services team. Students are required to bring their own morning tea (and water bottle / hat). The cost for this day will be approximately $20-$25. Permission notes will come home with your child on day 1.
