Students at Sunshine Beach State High School have the opportunity to participate in the internationally recognized Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Award is designed to develop youth leadership in our community. To complete any level of these Awards, students must show commitment to four key areas.
- Community Service – Volunteering time within our community.
- Physical Activity – Participate in activities to improve & maintain fitness.
- Skill – Learn a challenging skill that requires commitment.
- Adventurous Journey – Discover new surroundings and develop a sense of adventure.
Students can design their own program doing the things that interest them most. For example, if they’re already in a sporting team then they can use that as their physical activity.
At Sunshine Beach High, we’ve aligned each level of the awards as follows:
Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
Participants must be between ages 14 and 25
- Duke of Ed Bronze Award - Year 9 or higher
- Duke of Ed Silver Award - must complete Bronze first
- Duke of Ed Gold Award - must complete Bronze & Silver first
What impact does the Award have on a young person?
Through this challenging journey of self-discovery, our participants:
- are equipped and empowered to achieve their personal best;
- learn to take responsibility for their goals and choices;
- become connected to and actively engaged within their immediate community;
- make a real difference to society through their positive contributions and involvement;
- learn to persevere and overcome barriers to success;
- learn important life skills;
- increase their career opportunities.
