Tin Can Bay Houseboat Camp

Year 11 Marine Aquatic Practices students participated in the annual Sandy Straits Voyage on board 10 metre houseboats.  The group departed from Tin Can Bay and navigated their way to Gary’s Anchorage and Kauri Creek as part of the four day expedition. During their time on board they learnt such skills as navigation, safety and emergency procedures, marine radio, powerboat handling, working in a team, leadership, fishing and bait catching, environmental awareness and cooking.  Highlights of this year’s trip included a short exploration of Fraser Island to locate Gary’s Lake and observing the numerous turtles, dugong and dolphins and occasional dingo.  The trip provides a great remote location for students to apply many skills taught in the classroom environment.
