At Sunshine Beach, we believe that our core business is your students and their learning. “Teaching the Sunshine Way” captures the way we do business - what you will see in a typical classroom every day. Our school has a common framework / language of instruction utilising elements of ‘The Art and Science of Teaching’ (Robert Marzano) and 'New Pedagogies for Deep Learning' (Michael Fullen). This has enabled us to develop greater consistency across the school in our practices as we plan learning across the school.
The sunshine way
Teachers at SBSHS will:
-
clearly communicate to students what they are learning
-
help students track their progress and give them feedback during lessons/units
-
compliment students when they are doing something well
-
have high expectations for student learning and behaviour
Why?
- because learning goals are the backbone of every lesson;
- because student self-reflection/feedback is the number one critical factor for student success;
- because positive feedback improves student disposition to learning. And improved student disposition improves student outcomes;
- because when teachers have high expectations for students and provide tasks that are engaging and of high interest, students build self-esteem, increase confidence and improve academic performance (Brophy, 2008; 2010).
