Sunshine Beach High School challenges all students to achieve at their highest levels in all fields of endeavour. Our Sports Excellence Program aims to provide talented surfers the opportunity to pursue sporting excellence in a supportive educational environment.

Our award winning Excellence in Surfing Program is an extension of the Physical Education program aiming to enhance the technical skills, tactical awareness, physiological development and psychological aspects of the surfers’ performance. The program aims to bring together the very best surfers in our school region.

Sunshine Beach State High School provides expert coaching for students participating in this program as well as community experts from various fields such as Queensland surfing.  Physiotherapy, sports psychology and nutrition are also available to provide support to the program.

Our program

The primary aim of the Sunshine Beach State High School Excellence in Surfing program is to equip students for success in life through the sport of surfing. The Excellence in Surfing program has been developed due to the popularity of surfing in our school region. The Junior Excellence in Surfing program aims to introduce and develop surfing related concepts that students might otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.  The Senior Excellence in Surfing program aims at enhancing competitive strategies and techniques in surfing.

These concepts include individual skills and competition tactics, sports psychology and focuses on the students’ physical performance.

The Excellence in Surfing program is more than a series of physical training sessions. Students involved in the Excellence in Surfing program are required to attend sports related theory sessions and develop an extensive knowledge, including fitness development, organisational, judging, surf video editing and managerial aspects of the sport.

The overall objective of the Excellence in Surfing program is not simply to develop good surfers, but also the education of students about personal development and strategies of hard work and determination for success.

Elite surfers

Patron of our School Surfing Program is Julian Wilson, past student and currently ranked 5th on the World Circuit. Also a number of other great surfers have attended Sunshine Beach State High School including Naomi Stevic - all currently competing on the world circuit, as well as Dean Brady.
