Years 7-9
In Junior English, students engage with a variety of texts for enjoyment. They listen to, read, view, interpret, evaluate and perform a range of spoken, written and multimodal texts. These include various types of media texts, early adolescent novels, non-fiction, poetry and dramatic performances. Students develop their understanding of how texts are influenced by context, purpose and audience.
Year 10
Year 10 is the foundation for the senior phase of learning. Students hone their analytical skills, examine language use and produce a wide range of texts. Students are prepared to select the appropriate pathway through the senior school, where students either study Essential English or English or Literature.
Years 11-12
Essential English (Applied)
Essential English develops and refines students' understanding of language, literature and literacy to enable them to interact confidently and effectively with others in everyday, community and social contexts.
English (General)
English focuses on the study of both literary texts and non-literary texts, developing students as independent, innovative and creative learners and thinkers who appreciate the aesthetic use of language, analyse perspectives and evidence, and challenge ideas and interpretations through the analysis and creation of varied texts.
Literature (General)
Literature focuses on the study of literary texts: novels, plays, poems, films and short stories. Students explore how literary texts shape perceptions of the world and how texts may reflect or challenge cultural ways of thinking. Students think critically and creatively and appreciate the aesthetic use of language, and style.
English & Literature (General – year 12 only)
The English & Literature Extension course offers more challenge than other English courses. Students apply different theoretical approaches to analyse and evaluate a variety of literary texts and different ways readers might interpret these texts.
