SBSHS Whole-School Approach to Reading
At SBSHS, we are committed to improving student outcomes by prioritising reading across all year levels, in line with the Queensland Department of Education's guidelines. Our evidence-informed approach ensures every student has access to the explicit instruction and targeted support they need to succeed.
Key initiatives include:
- Early identification and intervention through Year 7 DIBELS screening
- Consistent whole-school strategies, such as explicit vocabulary instruction and reading placemats across subjects
- Targeted programs like the Sunshine Reading Program for Years 7–8
- Individualised support for students with specific reading needs, guided by Reading Profiles and specialist input
Our approach is underpinned by the Simple View of Reading, which recognises the importance of both word recognition and language comprehension in developing strong readers.
